There’s a big bike ride fixin’ to happen (this expat lived in the Carolinas for a few years) in Woluwe Park this Saturday, August 19th. The route starts and ends in the “Village du Beau Vélo de RAVeL” — a special area set up within the park for the hundreds of people expected to attend to register themselves. RAVeL and its hefty sponsors have also lined up family-fun activities and some really good entertainment. Now, I’m by no means a fitness diva, thus I find myself contemplating how much Belgian beer and ibuprofen will be required at the end of the route’s 23 KM (just over 14 miles.)
Of course bike riding it is not the only option. RAVeL says I’m welcome to do the route on foot, on rollerblades or even on a horse. Hmmmm, the horse idea sounds very enticing, but I think I’ll stick with the bicycle. For further details and a route map, check out this PDF in French and Flemish.
Here are some of the highlights in English:
- Registration is free and takes place from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm
- The first 1300 registrants get a free T-shirt & the first 2000 registrants get a voucher for a free brunch.
- Fun activities including a Children’s Village with bouncy castles & climbing wall, plus a Wallonian Gourmande Village to explore native agricultural products. Extra activities will be ongoing from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.
- The bike ride commences at 1:10 pm.
- Mid-way rest stop on the rugby fields of Cité de l’Amitié from 2:15 pm to 2:45 pm featuring music by the Pelouse Grass Band and a degustation (tasting) with chef Thomas Bourgeois of Koru Hôtel.
- End your ride by relaxing in the park and listening to music from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Three rather awesome acts are lined up thanks to the event’s sponsors: Axelle Red, La Voix de ses Maîtres and Typh Barrow.
- The day will be broadcast live on RTBF.be
- The event organizers encourage everyone to arrive by bicycle or public transportation. If arriving by car is necessary check out the free parking areas on the PDF mentioned above.
So wish me bonne chance, not-rainy-weather and gentle hills! I’m hoping this will firm up my mental map of WSP (along with firming up some muscles….) Looking forward to seeing the neighborhoods and hearing some great music.
